NOTES FROM THE ROAD

Split the cost without spoiling the trip

Coffee, a notebook, receipts and car keys at a roadside cafe.

Agree on the simple things before the first fuel stop.

Decide what is shared

Fuel and group accommodation are often shared, while individual purchases may not be. There is no automatic rule. Agree together, especially if passengers join for only part of the route.

Keep one record

Record the amount, payer and purpose of each shared purchase. Use one currency consistently in a calculation. If purchases happen in different currencies, agree how to convert them before adding them together.

Check the total against payments

Before settling up, make sure the paid amounts equal the total shared expenses. Our Expense Splitter checks this when you enter individual payments; it cannot verify receipts or transactions.

Make equal shares explicit

Equal splitting is convenient, but it may not match every arrangement. Children, different room choices and partial journeys can call for another agreement. WheelStory’s tool calculates equal shares only.

Settle clearly

A person who paid more than their share should receive the difference; someone who paid less owes the balance. Rounding can leave a small remainder, so agree how to handle the final cent. The tool does not transfer money.
